Happy 4th of July!

Happy Independence Day to all of our American Potatoes! We had a lot of pedaling happening on this holiday and it yielded us 6 new official potatoes. Backpack Potato was just too darn hot “ugh” – but still has a magnet with 180.0 miles. Mythical Patata also crossed the finish line with 114.9 miles and “I’m a potato!!”. Spud Cool was chasing a fast teenager that got her over the line with 104.74 miles and a magnet. Laura Latkes is wishing all a Happy 4th! She enjoyed the day off and an early morning ride to earn her magnet (104.0 miles). Next are burgers and fireworks! Yes Ma’am Yam got her magnet with a bike ride to 4th of July parade and back with the family (husband and daughter on a tandem). Break to watch the parade and collect nutrition (aka candy thrown from floats). She checks in with 102.91 miles. Buck-A-Spud may have been out with several other potatoes today and she passed the century mark with 100.3 miles. Congratulations to all of our latest taters who made it official. Keep pedaling – and it looks like we have several in that “30 or less to go” group: Fry Alicia, Loch Ness Potato, Tuberville, Spud Funk, Winning Spud, Sewin’ Spuds, CycoTater, Tracie Tots, and Hash Slinger. We should see all of them earn their magnets soon.

Potato Happenings

In other news, wow – we’re you all really out there stomping on those pedals. Some may have even been watching the sprint finish for the boys in France – no spoilers here. This is what your telling us about your day:

Fry Alicia Well we will call this home and bike as trees were down on the path and a detour was in order but perfect temps! Bar Fry Had such a beautiful ride early this morning. Got to finish with the view of a beautiful dear mow munching my friend’s lawn. So grateful to be able to enjoy this gorgeous scenery! Kartoffel Kaiser After my beloved cat “Wednesday” woke me up to serve her breakfast at 6:00 am, I thought it best to get pedaling to beat the heat!

Chip-n-Dale Rode through downtown Boulder to Chautauqua Park and then the Big Mesa Trail in Moab. Have a great 4th everyone! Microchip Indoor ride through Moab, listening to Medical Mysteries. Nice! I may have to find this one – Moab is one of our favorite places to Jeep.

Golly D Tater and Christmas Potato Biked 16.1 miles for donuts on a beautiful 4th of July. Now that’s my kind of ride. CycoTater Morning ride with the hubs and baby brother. I think my bro dubbed “Little Tater” on this ride could be a beast on a bike…

Commissioner Potato nice flat ride (just like the stage in France). Cajun Gator Tater Trail riding in the mountains! (more like what they have coming up in France)

Kato Potato I saw five deer! Her family nickname for her whole life has been Kato Potato so here she is, in the perfect event. Yam Kronen Rained out, so me and my crocheted potato did an indoor spin. Chilli Cheese Fries A quick tandem spin before the 4th festivities begin! Disorderly TaterCommissioner Tater and I continued or “annual July 4” ride on the B&A trail in Maryland (Baltimore Annapolis). Did not make it to Annapolis but did the entire trail part. Again, WHY IS IT SO HOT?! Hash Slinger Made the trek to Mt. Vernon for Independence Day.

Decapotato Saliendo con los amigos y sumando Millas (Hanging out with friends and earning miles – I think I translated that – yes, I’m learning Spanish so I tried).

Spud Funk Day started off with a Fourth of July Run in Myrtle Beach. Got to follow that up with a warm ride to “cool down”. Pump up the Yam Trying to catch up to my WAB buds (and wife, Buck-A-Spud), Tuberville, Holy Potato and You Be Yameen. Got a long way to go…

Administrivia

Our potatoes have pedaled 6431.17 miles toward that 30,000 mile goal (only 23568.83 to go). We have 140 potatoes pedaling and only 62 potatoes on the couch. It’s time to get OFF the couch!!

Day 5 & 5 more Official Taters

That’s right – five more of you rockin’ spuds crossed the finish line today. Magnets all around! You be YAmeen was out riding with other potato heads that have become friends (that’s what we like to hear) and reached 118.02 miles. Marshmallow Fluff Potato is also finished for another magnet with 106.3 miles. As reported yesterday,  Chip-n-Dale road Flagstaff Road climb to amphitheater in Boulder this morning and he’s finished (yesterday/today, doesn’t matter – it’s the magnet that matters) – 101.08 miles. Surfin’ Spud and Fo’Fanna Potato hit the finish line exactly today with 100.0 miles. Congratulations to all of our finishers so far – seven in total.

Potato Happenings

Also out there pedaling away are Loch Ness Potato, Tuberville, Yes Ma’am Yam, Backpack Potato, and Mythical Patata – this is our group with less than 30 miles to go. Maybe they’ll all POP off the last of their miles in celebration of the United States’ birthday tomorrow.

Buck-A-Spud had a great ride with cycling group that included Tuberville, Holy Potato, and You Be YAmeen! Harley Taterson was out for another beautiful day near the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland back country roads! CFNo Spud is looking for a name change – should be Potato String b/c I’m handing on to Tri Spud by a thread. Artful Tuber realized that I entered my birthday, not the ride date yesterday. 🤦🏼‍♀️Spuddles is thankful for the rails to trails right in my neighborhood. Beautiful ride today. We even saw a wild Turkey!

Keep those pedals pumping and the tales coming. I am pedaling away on my stationary bike so I’m vicarious through all of you! If you’re still on the couch, hop up and pedal before enjoying fireworks tomorrow. If we enjoy potato salad with our BBQ , is that considered cannibalism? Inquiring minds want to know.

Administrivia

Our potatoes have pedaled 4985.74 miles toward that 30,000 mile goal (only 25014.26 to go). We have 129 potatoes pedaling and only 73 potatoes on the couch.

And then there were TWO

Bandit Yam picked a wonderful day for an early morning ride in the Northern Neck, 70 degrees and a very light wind bringing him over the finish line. He’s our second official potato, with 102.3 miles. Congrats!!

Chip-n-Dale, Backpack Potato, Surfin’ Spud, Marshmallow Fluff Potato, and Fo’Fanna Potato are all within 30 miles of the finish line – who will cross the century mark next? Reports indicate it’s Chip-n-Dale who did the Mrazek Trail this morning and then the Lava Island Trailhead along the Deschutes River (Deschutes makes a pretty good IPA. He could use one right about now!) CycoTater is shouting him out but we won’t make him official until we see them entered. Look for it tomorrow.

Potato Happenings

Fry Alicia Well it dropped 20 degrees in CO so went outside and I like calling this ride dodging geese as all the darn critters were swarming the bike path and not budging…I almost had one to take home for my dinner 😂

Sour Mashed Spud Beautiful day for Biker Chicks to ride. One of the Chicks had some motivational little potatoes crocheted to encourage us along the way 🥔🥔

Grape Tater First outdoor ride since… When did last year’s Tour end? Haha

Chilli Cheese Fries Spin Class!

Mann, I feel like a potato got in an early morning ride with another spud. A couple of miles in, I noticed she didn’t have on her helmet. We detoured by my house to get her a helmet and then a few miles down the road, realized she forgot her water too….:) we adapted, but may be a healthy reminder about spud safety!

Loch Ness Potato – beautiful solo ride this morning before the heat returns tomorrow!

Mythical Patata – 1st gravel ride and first ride on her new gravel bike!! Feel like a soggy potato right now due to all the hills!

Administrivia

Our potatoes have pedaled 3867.73 miles toward that 30,000 mile goal (only 26,132.27 to go). We have 118 potatoes pedaling and only 84 potatoes on the couch.

Our First Official Tater

We have our first official potato today! Decapotato tells us he’s successfully starting his week – yep, by finishing off his 100 miles. He is our first official potato with 103.46 miles and a new magnet. Backpack Potato, Surfin’ Spud, and Chip-n-Dale are all less than 30 miles away!!

Potato Happenings

Chip-n-Dale rode from Union Square to the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. Then rode Windy Hill to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. (* All of my rides have been virtual. I wish I was riding on the West Coast right now.). Toni the Spud was out on a group ride and the fearless ride leader, You be Yamen, thought provided a botany lessons at every stop….this allowed the slower group to catch up.

CycoTater captured it best for those who have been outside recently. A direct quote “Ahhhhhh, blessedly cool ride today…..”

Yam Kronen battled wind, hills, 5 deer 1 dog and a squirrel but in the end, Got er done! Potato Prez reports that after Yes Ma’am Yam told him that she got stung by a bee yesterday, he was stung on the lip today! Captain Spud is back on the trainer for the first day of his Zwift Tour.

Keep an eye on Duchess Potato and Madam Tuber – we’re the only ones who have made EVERY edition of Le Tour. Will we finish this year? Bubba Spud dropped out last year and now I have to out-last my sister!

Administrivia

Keep pedaling as we try for that 30,000 mile marker. We are currently at 2760.76 miles with 105 potatoes pedaling. That leaves only 97 potatoes on the couch (there’s now a song in my head about bottles of beer).

Day 2 and Almost 2000 Miles

Day 2 is done for most of us and the potatoes are showing up! The heat is trying to win but potatoes are finding their way around it – stationary bikes to the rescue!

Potato Happenings

Staying in, out of the heat, Spudly took a cue from Yogatato and rode the Peloton in air conditioned splendor. Sewin’ Spuds also found it too hot outside and rode the stationary bike in the AC! 🙂 Spud Cool stayed cool: what do you do when you fly home late the day before? Ride of course! (Indoors for safety). Fat Tire Tater was on the stationary bike – too hot outdoors. And finally, Potato Prez was Zwifting again.

Our brave potatoes that are now “cooked” spuds include Simmering Spud who was outside and interrupted by rain! But a nice drizzly dawn patrol before the steady rain arrived. Chip-n-Dale took a little jaunt through Big Basin Redwoods State Park and a sunset ride from Devil’s Slide along the Pacific Coast Highway to Miramar. CycoTater Another steamy 15 with the hubs. CFNo Spud tried his best to hang on to the wheel of Tri Spud (looks like she ended up with more miles though). Nashed Potato took a friend along to ride!

As I type this we have 89 potatoes off the couch already. I’m still working on Potato Names for some of you – but have no fear, I’m almost done.

If you don’t happen to see your miles when you look at the sheet, I promise, they will get added. It can take a few hours for them to populate and there is a pause between the population and this post coming out. Don’t worry – they will get there. There are two of us and 200 of you 🙂

If you don’t see something by the next day, shoot us an email or comment on the blog and we’ll look into it. Next week we’ll start some shout outs so get to stomping on those pedals if you haven’t already!

And They’re Off

Le Tour de Couch Potato, edition 14 is off and running. We had a little glitch this morning with logging miles so if you had an issue, please retry – all is fixed. There are already a bunch of potatoes on the road – 24 pedaling so far – and enjoying the heat (or not as we’ll see below.

Potato Happenings

Salt Life Yam really perfected being a couch potato this year. Today she started peeling back my potato status towards my goal of returning to a skinny fry! This was the excuse she needed!

A lot of our potatoes were out early to beat the heat. Bandit Yam hit the Capital Trail bright and early and joined lots of people using the Trail this morning. Almighty Spud and Drunk Spud also started early and were able to catch the last bit of the race in France during a nice lunch stop. They are happily halfway after day one. Surfin Spud had a beautiful 5:45 am ride through the Francis Marion National Forest on the road. The run after turned into a walk as the heat got to me. Pickle juice to the rescue for cramping calves. Harley Taterson did an early morning ride along flat untraveled roads near Trappe, Maryland which was just gorgeous.
Also checking in while outside was Chip-n-Dale who did a ride from Fisherman’s Wharf, up and down Lombard Street, to the Bay Bridge. Also rode the Grizzly Peak in Berkeley. Spud Luda met the rubber tire bear and cub at Bollinger Park in Taneytown!

Reporting in from the cool stationary bikes are Yogatato who stayed cool by riding the P! and Potato Prez who is Zwifting in France while the boys are riding in Italy. Mythical Patata is off the couch with an indoor warm-up – the “real” miles start tomorrow with some fellow potatoes.

Haus of Spuds did not beat the heat but summed the weather up best with: “Hot. Damn hot. Do some crotch pot cooking hot.”

Administrivia

We’re stiving for a goal of 30,000 miles this year – 611.03 as of this report! We have 24 potatoes on the road, 202 still on the couch, and no mashed potatoes that have reported in.

I’m working on potato names so if you don’t have one yet, have no fear, I’m going out to dinner and may have a few drinks. I could get creative! HA

Registration is Open

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and all pedaling potatoes, gather ’round! It’s the time of year when we hop on our two-wheelers and set sail on the greatest cycling adventure ever. No, not the Tour de France. Please, that’s for over-caffeinated, spandex-clad professionals with more time than sense. We’re talking about our very own, infinitely superior, and unquestionably more enjoyable alternative: Le Tour de Couch Potato.

We’re replacing grueling hill climbs with leisurely jaunts to local breweries. Instead of breakneck sprints, we’ll be pausing for photo ops with local livestock. As the “pros” tour France, we’ll pedal around our neighborhoods, basements, trails, etc. to reach our 100 miles in 3 weeks. Don’t forget the most important part: have fun and don’t take the ride too seriously.

Dust off your helmets, pump up your tires, and join us for a cycling adventure unlike any other. Register now, fellow cycling potatoes, and we’ll see you at the starting line!
