Nothing is Rotten in Denmark

We’re only three days in and we have our first official potato. Marshmallow Fluff Potato crossed the 100 mile threshold today with 104.1 miles. She is one of 135 potatoes on the road and eleven of those are half way or more.

Over 3500 miles have been pedaled in our 3 days so far. I’m sure we’ll be breaking records this year.

Potato Happenings:

Last of the Potatoes is constantly riding into the wind on the gulf coast, but still adding up the miles. Fry Alicia had a serious climb up to the school house but was rewarded with chocolate chip cookies – worth the ride. Commissioner Potato found too many hills on his ride, but again – the miles are adding up.

Chilli Cheese Fries was out with the hubster on a ride while Sooper Spud rode further than she has in over 25 years – go girl! Yogatato was out for an early morning ride -maybe to beat the heat?

The wild life was out today as well. Blooming Spud saw (and stayed away from) a bobcat and either Yes Ma’am Yam or 50 in 50 Potato was held up by geese crossing.

Potato Prez did his Zwift miles in London while watching the boys in Denmark and Bumble Spud is riding through Sweden. An international ride for sure.

Potato Names: yes, I come up with your names based on a few things. I’m happy to take suggestions, etc. but remember, each name is unique. I can’t change your name to something someone already has. We’re happy to have had about 600 different participants and that’s a LOT of potato names. Please send your suggestions – based on something someone does, their name, etc. I may (or may not) make the change!

Log your miles using the exact email you registered with or they won’t show up. Pedaling ends at midnight, July 24 and all miles need to be entered by midnight July 25.

Day 2 and over 2000 miles

Day 2 was a busy day for the potatoes. We’ve got 104 potatoes off the couch and Decapotato is already closing in on his magnet with over 80 miles. As a group, we’re over 2000 miles on day two – pedal potatoes, pedal!

We have potatoes pedaling inside, outside and all around. I see lots of Pelotons and several potatoes are outside enjoying the 4th of July weekend.

Potato Happenings:

Spudlicious is one of those on the Peloton but looking to get back outside tomorrow and Tri Potato is already outside exploring trails around her new house. Also enjoying the neighborhood is DrewTuber – but maybe not enjoying it so much – he forgot it’s super hilly!

Fry Like an Eagle and Oh-Kay Tuber were enjoying the OBX for the holiday and took in the Wright Bros. Memorial on bikes – gotta get those miles in. Also enjoying history as one of our potatoes rode to Mt. Vernon but I don’t have a name – help a potato out please. 😀

Commissioner Potato and Disorderly Tater and continuing a family ride for the 4th. Looks like they’re adding riders as they go – hopefully new potatoes.

Mythical Patata made her way through the end of a parade route. She should have just added some streamers and joined in.

And they’re off

With a record number of potatoes this year (268), the 2022 edition of Le Tour de Couch Potato is off to an awesome start. We have 47 potatoes stomping on their pedals already and almost 800 miles logged. Those boys in France have nothing on us.

Mythical Patata and Stormin’ Spud are checking in with over 40 miles each while close on their tail are Marshmallow Fluff Potato and LowTato.

Keep an eye on our three potatoes who have finished every edition of the Couch Potato – Duchess Potato, Madam Tuber (yours truly) and Bubba Spud – can they all make it 12 years in a row?

Here’s hoping we have more finishers than ever and no DUD SPUDS!

Potato Happenings:

Marshmallow Fluff Potato was able to get all those miles on her Peloton as a now retired, spoiled rotten potato – her inner jock has joined her inner child and both are happy to be back.

Cajun Gator Tater is tipping the helmet to La Nuova Patata for letting her borrow her bike (though she went through 3 tubes on a short ride).

Irish Spud, Harley Taterson, Papas Marinas, and Rob Roy Tuber are all excited to be out for another tour. Spuddux, Yam Kronen, Swisher Sweet Potato, and Tom Tater all got to enjoy the outdoors – Tom Tater’s enjoyment was in question as he had to ride between the raindrops.

Potato Prez started off today in 94 degrees but a nice flat ride – he’s looking for magnet number 10! Billy Spud joined a group ride on the bike that goes nowhere to start looking for magnet number 1!

Did you know…the 1st Tour de France started on this date in 1903? It lasted for 19 days – thanks Mystery Spud for our fun fact of the day!

Mid-June Reminder: there’s still time to sign up!

If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time: Register Here!

Our Grand Depart is July 1st and registration will close just before so sign up now. We’re continuing our online engagement from last year and leveraging the website, allowing us to eliminate emails in favor of daily (or almost daily) blog posts.
Tour information can be found on our website –> www.letourdecouchpotato.com. Be sure to follow our blog (link in the lower right corner) and/or via Facebook, so you’ll see the tour updates. That means No more emails after June 30!

Spread the word! Share with others who may be joining us for the first time as we love to see the tour grow. Just be sure they can follow the rules below.

Reporting Miles. Mileage tracking will all be done through the website – and is based on your registration email address. Be sure when you register, you remember the email address you registered with… if it’s different from what you use to track mileage, you won’t get credit.

2022 Dates to remember:

  • Ride dates: July 1st – July 24th
  • Registration will close at 12:01 AM, July 1st – as the ride begins. We aren’t capping the number of riders, but we will close registration once the ride begins.

The “Rules” are posted here with details below:

  • From July 1st – July 24th, you must ride at least 100 miles (no bonus for riding extra – just bragging rights!). Finishers get a “fancy” refrigerator magnet to show all your friends (preview this year’s magnet at the top of this blogpost)
  • Any miles ridden on a bike, and that can be tracked with an odometer, count toward your 100. If you attend a spin class and “guess” how far you went, that doesn’t count! The bike can be a mountain bike, street bike, recumbent bike, stationary bike…just track the miles.
  • Your bike must be entirely human powered…no electric bikes.
  • Mile’s running/walking don’t count…
  • Post your online mileage daily – or close to – so you’ll be included in the daily update. If you opt to email your mileage, it won’t be on the update! That’s your fault for not following directions 🙂 NOTE: The daily update takes a while to compile so if you posted your mileage in the evening, it may not get included until the next day.
  • Submit MILES please. Yep – we have lots of international riders and hope to gain more. I, however, learned the conversion of the metric system in junior high which was way too many years ago to count. Help a potato out here, please!
  • Updates come out almost daily – sometimes I get busy with work (or just lazy) and don’t get them out. The updates will be posted to Facebook as well
  • All riders get a potato name and I reserve the right to change your name on a whim. I also reserve the right to harass anyone I want to – hope you have thick potato skin
  • We’re here to have fun and this is a once a year event, make the most of it – have fun with us
Happy Pedaling, Madam Tuber

Couch Potato Sign Up is 6/1: What to expect

Registration for Le Tour de Couch Potato is June 1

Whether you’re a seasoned Couch Potato rider or newcomer to Le Tour, having good expectations of the sign-up process is important. After all, the cycling part should be the focus, right? Riding 100 miles in 23 days is a fun challenge – signing up & reporting mileage to Le Tour HQ should be the easy part!

Participant Communication

Madam Tuber will email previous participants on June 1 with a Registration Link. Remember: participation is free so share the email with a friend! To sign up, just provide basic information: your email address & name. We also collect other optional data, such as location (country/ state) and age – so add that as well, if you’re comfortable doing so. June 15 & 30 – Madam Tuber will send an email reminder & “last call” for riders before the official start date of Le Tour, July 1.

Daily Updates from Madam Tuber will be available to Le Tour de Couch Potato Blog subscribers and shared on our Facebook Group Page (search for “Le Tour de Couch Potato”). Blog Subscribers can decide how/ when to receive notifications on the daily entries.

The only other direct email from LTdCP Admins will come once you’ve completed 100 miles – Madam Tuber will send you a link to order your 2022 Commemorative Finisher Magnet.

Reporting Mileage

Your registration confirmation will include a link to use for reporting your mileage ridden. Simply click the link to enter miles ridden between July 1 & 24 – ideally on or close to the actual day you ride (our potato recordkeepers like to be up-to-date). It is super important to use the same email address you registered with – that’s how we line up the miles with the correct rider.

There’s also a space on the mileage report to add a fun story/ unique aspect of the day’s ride. Madam Tuber often includes these anecdotes in her daily blogpost. Share any pictures from your ride on Facebook too – they are really inspirational to fellow potato riders.

Most important of all – Have Fun.

Refer A Friend

Le Tour de Couch Potato® didn’t grow to its current size in just a day or even a year: the growth happened because YOU – our participants – enjoyed it and talked your family & friends into joining. The 100 miles (in 23 days) averages out to about 5 miles a day – so this challenge is within most people’s grasp.

Le Tour de Couch Potato – 2021 Final Report

Hard to believe but sadly it’s here

Le Tour de Couch Potato is done for the year

Potatoes pedaled like crazy, 143 crossed the line

Despite the heat/humidity, all look mighty fine

Finishing every tour, still there are three

Bubba Spud, Duchess Potato and Madam Tuber (that’s me!)

Two hit 10 years, check the hall of fame

Texas Potato, Home Fries, I’ll call you by name

Eight ready for patches at 5 years complete

Additional SWAG, Oh what a treat

Thirty-seven rookies all got it done

Come back next year for more of the fun

There was one potato that got a little mashed

Fortunately, he still finished with a splash

Then there are those who go by DUD SPUD

Signed up but didn’t finish, all to say is CRUD

That’s all for now and thank you for playin’

Hope you had fun; we did – just sayin’

Happy Pedaling,

Madam Tuber
